Around Me

A directory of walk-in businesses where every listing is added from the premises and re-confirmed there every six months — or it drops out of search.

The problem

Map listings go out of date and nobody tells the map. A shop closes, a barber moves two streets over, the opening hours change, and the old listing stays up until you are standing outside a locked door. That is not bad luck; it is how directories are built. Anyone can drop a pin from anywhere, leaving a dead listing in place costs nobody anything, and there is no signal on the page of how recently any of it was true. Online-only and service-area businesses are mixed in with places you can actually walk into. A directory measured on how many listings it holds is rewarded for never removing one, so the stale entries are not a defect the model tolerates — they are what the model produces.

The approach

Make the location a proof rather than a claim. A business can only be added in the app, by someone standing at the premises, with the phone capturing and checking the position — so there is no way to list a place you are not at. The listing then has to be confirmed from the same spot every six months, with a reminder before it falls due, and if it is not confirmed it drops out of search on its own. Every result carries the date it was last confirmed on site, and only businesses customers can walk into are accepted. For customers there is no account at all: pick a category, choose a distance, call or get directions. Money is not allowed to corrupt the ordering either. A Silver listing is free permanently; Gold and Platinum are a single annual payment with no auto-renewal that move a business up within the results in range, nearest first inside each tier — and every tier is labelled, so a customer can always see why one listing sits above a nearer one.

Who built it

Around Me was founded and built by Abdul Rehman Sandhu, a qualified accountant and technology advisor working with businesses globally. The same diagnostic approach behind this venture is the one applied in client engagements.
